150 different ways your head can throb!

Can you believe, there are over 150 different ways your head can throb, and imagining the complexities – my head is throbbing now without a headache! So today, let’s explore the most common culprits, so you can (hopefully) identify the kind plaguing you and find some relief – just like Surya from Khar Mumbai who was concerned about his wife facing chronic headaches. This article is inspired by his story.

My research on types of headaches led me to broadly classify them into two categories: primary and secondary headaches.

  • Primary headaches as I understood, are the most common and aren’t caused by any underlying medical condition. They are like the peeps who show up randomly and steal the spotlight all on their own. So headaches arising from tensions, migraines, and cluster headaches all fall under this category.
  • Secondary headaches are like the side effects that seem to appear due to other health issues, like dehydration, sinus infections, or even high blood pressure.

But wait, how do you know if your headache is due to any of the above? (Get a 2nd opinion)

Here are some clues to watch out for, that might help you self-analyze to a certain extent. A better way of course is to consult your doctor.

The Usual Suspects: Unveiling Primary Types of Headaches

  • The Tension Bam-Bam kind of headaches are the most frequent offenders who usually feel like a dull, aching sensation around your head, or a tightness like a headband squeezing a little too hard. Stress, muscle strain, and dehydration are common triggers for these tension types of headaches.
  • The Migraine Maestro headaches are the intense, throbbing headaches that can make you want to crawl into a dark cave and often come with a number of other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines can last for hours or even days, and you can truly label them as performance killers that you’d rather want to miss.
  • The Cluster Catastrophe form of headaches are thankfully less frequent but incredibly painful and feel like striking in cycles, usually around one eye, and feel like a burning or piercing sensation. You may imagine them like tiny jackhammers going off behind your eye and that’s why I labeled them the cluster catastrophe in a nutshell.

Beyond the Big Three: Other Types of Headaches

Apart from the 3 mentioned above, there’s a whole family of secondary characters in the world of headaches.

  • Sinus Headache Symphony will make you feel the pain and pressure around your forehead, the cheeks, and eyes, that might be often accompanied by a stuffy nose – if you are facing such a situation, most likely it’s the sinus headache symphony playing out.
  • Rebound Rhapsody is my way of labeling a headache that happens because we can get a little too reliant on pain medication. So the very medicines that were meant to be our heroes for certain ailments can turn into villains, causing rebound headaches.
  • Caffeine Cacophony is for the regular coffee or tea drinkers who might feel caffeine withdrawal headache if they skip the daily dose of tea or coffee. So this one can be a real cacophony of discomfort and might make one grab that cuppa as soon as possible.
